The even simpler explanation is that while the number of bird species in Aus is
under a thousand, the number of plant species is an order of magnitude [or two] 
greater.

Hence, there is far greater chance of confusion arising from the use of common
names [that and the fact that the multiplicity and non-specificity of common
plant names is much greater].  Most of you can eventually work out what [bird
species] a weero is [particularly if you ask Frank].  Much harder to work out
common names in use in other parts of Oz.
