Hi birders

Truganina Explosives Reserve is a small (c. 17ha) area of grassland,
saltmarsh and derived woodland on the foreshore at Altona in Melbourne's
bayside western suburbs. At some stage in the near future it will be
incorporated into public parkland on the foreshore, but at the moment
it's still out of bounds. I conducted a short fauna assessment there on
Tuesday afternoon and evening, and the list appears below.

The stand out fauna from my point of view included: Brown Quail (2) - in
keeping with the general incursion of Brown Quail this past summer at
Point Cook and Werribee; Spotless Crake (1) - in dry tussock grassland
of Chaffy Saw-sedge, Blady-grass and Coastal Tussock-grass - odd
location really, and it flushed; Little Eagle (1) - roosting in planted
Mahogany Gums, regionally significant; Brush Cuckoo (1) - an immature
bird, slightly unusual distribution, but possibly on passage from areas
further SW where small summer populations sometimes exist.
