Tony Russell asked: "Does anyone have a list of which eucalypts Koalas are
supposed to dine on for preference?"
The following is from "Locating Koalas in the Australian Bush" by Scott
Buckingham (a book which I won last year by identifying a 'mystery photo'
of a regurgitated currawong pellet in Nature Australia magazine!)
Koala Food (Browse) Trees
"...Koalas are known to eat the leaves of only 50-60 of Australia's 500-600
species of eucalypts. Of these, a few main species are preferred..."
Favoured food species in southern Australia:
Manna Gum (E. viminalis)
Swamp Gum (E. ovata)
In NSW and Qld:
Forest Red Gum (E. tereticornis)
Tallowwood (E. microcorys)
Grey Gum (E. punctata)
Other popular food trees include:
Blue Gum (E. globulus)
River Red Gum (E. camaldulensis)
Flooded Gum (E. grandis)
It's an interesting little book.
Cheers,
Carol
