For some years there has been a population of Bell Miners in the Royal Botanic
Gardens in Melbourne. They were originally only located in the corner of the
gardens far away from the Victoria Barracks in St Kilda Road but over the last
few years it has been possible to hear their calls from within the Barracks.
On Tuesday this week (19 February), I heard 2 Bell Miners in the eucalypt trees
in the carpark inside the back fence of the Barracks, the one that runs
parallel with Wells Street. Being olive green in colour, they are rather
difficult to see in the trees and I only managed to finally see them yesterday
(Thursday), no doubt because I had to rely on unassisted eyesight as
binoculars are frowned on within the Barracks. The birds have now been there
every day this week and it seems they may have moved in. It will be
interesting to keep an eye on them and see if they remain.
Regards,
Tania
