Birding-aussers should be aware that according to comapnies that measure
these things, the volume of spam has doubled or tripled in the last few
months. I and fellow academics have noticed a huge increase in spam,
particularly from gambling and porn sites. I have no idea how these people
got my address, as I have never visited either kind of site, with the
unfortunate exception mentioned below. But sometimes the address are group
addresses, which I guess they have dragged off a web site somewhere. I now
have over 50 addresses in my filter. One of the problems with some spam is
that it comes from address like or I
can't filter all hotmail emails because many of my students use hotmail.
It appears that the central program that operates the email system cannot
filter emails on the basis of words in the email. Another danger is
sometimes Spam mail has a web address to allow you to remove yourself from
the mailing list. My advice is: don't have anything to do with it. I once
went to such a site; but when I clicked the remove button, I was taken
straight to another porn site. And whenever I tried to close the site, I
was taken to another such site. The only way I could get out was to hit
Ctrl-Alt-Del. And it's quite possible that every site I was unwillingly
taken too captured information about my computer. This is totally unethical
behaviour, of course.
I'm totally fed up with it.
