G'day all
Some of you will have known Sue McInnes who died tragically in a boating
accident in East Gippsland earlier this week. She was a keen field naturalist
(esp. birds) and was a talented painter. Her best known works were the
illustrations in the series of Gould League field guides (Birds of Urban Areas,
Birds of the High Country etc.).
I met Sue when I moved to Hamilton in 1982. She and a couple of others were the
stalwarts of the Hamilton Field Nats. Sue and her husband Ivan (who also died
in the accident) farmed in the Victoria Valley in the Grampians. Their farm was
the first I had seen with substantial native tree plantings - they were quite
pioneering in that respect. They were also most protective of the large bush
areas on their poperty.
Through the field nats Sue was active in many causes and was certainly a driving
force behind the establishment of the Parklands in Hamilton as a refuge for
Eastern Barred Bandicoots. Another of her efforts was the development of a
management plan for the Grange Burn (Hamilton's long suffering little river).
Sue retired from her teaching position a few years ago and I haven't seen much
of her since. I regret this.
Cheers
Steve
