Hi Birders,
There has been some good birds seen on the Central
Coast during January 2002, some of these observations are set out
below.
A Hooded Plover was present on the
edge of the Little Tern colony at Karagi Pt The Entrance on 16 January when seen
by Don and Val Moon and again on 22 January when seen independently by Ern
Dunkley. I could not locate the bird on 24 January . This is the first record
for the Central Coast, as Hooded Plovers rarely are recorded north of the
Illawarra region.
White-winged Black Terns were first reported at
Karagi Pt on 19 December and are still present. Prior to New Year up to 20 were
present but only 3-4 birds have been seen in January. Look for them amongst the
large flocks of Common Terns.
A Masked Owl was seen at Warnervale on 19 January
by Robert Payne.
A male Turquoise Parrot was seen at Chittaway Bay
on 3 January by AKM and another at Mangrove Mountain about 10 January by
Margaret Pointer, both considered to be bushfire refugeees.
A Black Bittern was seen on a creek at West Gosford
on 10 Januaruy by Peter Settle and 1 at Lees Res Chittaway on 10 January, A+J
out of a nest near the railway bridge, Ourimbah Creek 10 Jan, and another at
Porters Creek, west of Wyong on 11 January all by AKM.
2A+2Y Pacific Bazas were at Palmdale on 21 January
seen by Malcolm McNaughton, while another pair with 2 young are still present at
John & Carole Carpenter's place at Mardi.
Plenty of White-throated Needletails throughout the
coast area.
