Tony Russell asks who will laugh at Earth Sanctuaries problems. I guess a
few left-wing dills who hate all private sector activity. But it will only
be a few. Most in the conservation movement have more than a little respect
for John Wamsley and for the success he has achieved. Conservation efforts
should not be the exclusive responsibility of government. There is room for
more than one approach.

John has achieved so much with such a small funding base. He received
negligible support from government. Nor did he ever get the private sector
support he needed -- Kerry Packer will spend tens of millions on a wildlife
park for exotic megafauna in the Northern Territory and Earth Sanctuaries
looks like failing for a lousy $10m. Think of the size of the public sector
conservation budget in Australia.

What could happen here is a tragedy.
