The Painted Snipe certainly had a few visitors this morning! I was
there from 10:20 to about 11:15 AM.
To start with Meryl & I were in the wrong place, at the north end, &
saw only Latham's Snipe in the first few minutes. Then Gina & Jenny
came round & said viewing from the fence line was excellent so we moved
to the fence on the east side, near the fattest round post. Fred &
Chris had just left.
The Painted Snipe was on the mud on the other side, close to a tennis
ball & a plastic bottle with blue label. It sat, moved slightly,
preened, moved a bit more, preened, turned.
Excellent viewing with a 'scope. We watched it for about 1/2 hour & it
was still there when we left just after 11 AM.
There appears to be some question as to the sex of this bird! Now I'm
really confused - is it male or immature female? Perhaps I'll visit
again Sat AM & an expert will be able to put me right! As its a first
for me, I have no picture in my mind for comparison.
No doubt there will be a few visitors to the grubby pool over the
weekend. Cheers, Celia
