We, Don G and I, have just returned from an EXCELLENT mornings birding
at Sherwood. We got there about 6.30 -6.40 am in light drizzling rain.
A perfect morning to see the birds we came for.
Well, we started by seeing a Little Grassbird, then a Baillon's Crake
followed by a Spotless Crake - all within about 5 metres. We travelled
around to a weel known Bittern site on the river side of the island. A
bird flew back over the other side but species unsure. We went back to
the other side of the island via the causeway and scanned along the
island's edge and there it was - a male Little Bittern right on the very
edge overlooking the water. We observed it for about 20 minutes , while
it looked around, catch tadpoles etc. It then walked up into the grass
and reeds etc and as it was raining we decided call it a morning. Don
added 3 to his list in 45 minutes. How could you concentrate on work
all day after such a start to the morning.
