Dollarbirds are around in the Lockyer Valley at last, and I've heard of
someone who has heard of someone who has heard a Koel!
With visitors coming and going, I spent a lot of today in the house or on
the verandah, and didn't get out much. Still the birding was good, with an
Eastern Whipbird in the bird bath, an Osprey in a tree close by (for the
third consecutive day), and all three of our local fairywrens (Superb,
Variegated and Red-backed) out and about in overlapping numbers. A King
Parrot has started coming to a native tobacco tree that we thought we had
left for Brown Cuckoo-doves.
Then, when I did set off into the garden to see what was about, Eileen
noticed a beautifully marked male Plum-headed Finch on a stick next to the
creek, with a less brilliant companion alongside. This was from the house! I
missed them entirely.
Spotted Harrier here yesterday morning, and Spotted, Spotless & Baillons
Crakes are all continuing to show themselves around local ponds.
This is the time of year when the monthly species count at Abberton (about
11 acres) edges up into the low 100s, to stay there for a few months before
dropping below again in autumn. As at the 25th, we're at 98 for September
and counting..... (Of the 193 spp we've recorded here, the record month was
111 last October).
