Dear Birding-Ausers,
Last week I put a brief note on Birding-Aus about pelagic boat trips that I
organise from Eaglehawk Neck with Bill Wakefield. (He does the Tasmanian end
and I handle the mainland.) Here is a bit more information.
This year, we have already had a successful trip last March. We saw Wandering,
Royal and Bullers Albatrosses, Great-winged, Goulds and White-chinned Petrel,
Huttons Shearwater, Grey-backed Storm-Petrel, Common Diving-Petrel and Great
Skua.
We have the boat booked for two further trips on 30 September and 25 November.
September should be an interesting month. In previous years, September trips
have been very productive with birds like Wandering and Royal Albatross, both
Giant Petrels, Southern Fulmar, Wilsons, White-faced and Grey-backed
Storm-Petrel and Common Diving-Petrel seen on one trip in 1998.
November can be equally rewarding with birds like Wandering and Royal
Albatross, Northern Giant Petrels, Cape, Great-winged, White-headed, Goulds,
Grey and Mottled Petrel, Black-bellied and Grey-backed Storm-Petrel, Common
Diving-Petrel and Arctic Tern seen on a trip in 1997. Other November trips have
added Southern Fulmar, White-chinned Petrel and Wilsons and White-faced
Storm-Petrels to the tally.
Tasmania should also offer some potential to see both species of Sooty Albatross
around this time.
There are still some places available for both trips at this stage. The cost
depends on numbers on the boat, but is in the range of $70 (full boat) to $90.
