Michael,
I would like to add another reason for not feeding wild birds.  The Spread of Disease.  Here in the Blue Mountains most people seem to put seed out for the crimson rosellas and king parrots.  In autumn, when natural food is scarcer and the weather turns cold we in Wires pick up many parrots sick with psittacosis or other diseases, often spread by the birds' habit of congregating at bird feeders.  The young birds, especially, have little resistance.
