>From memory Song Thrush are in decline in the United Kingdom
where competition from Blackbirds has been studied - I think
they wait for the Thrush to open a snail shell and then pinch
the contents.

Here in Bayside, SE Melbourne, there is a lot of year-to-year
variation in the number of Song Thrush records.

Why I don't know. But I suspect that rats feed on the introduced
garden snails, snipping open the shell at the apex of the
spiral.
