Dear Ros and all,
I've broken down your email into questions, which I
hope to answer.

Dear All,

Australian Magpies have been feeding on some sort of
lawn grubs over the last couple of weeks but they
mustn't like the "filling".

??????? could you elaborate please, location, time of
day, is the grub of a known variety ??????

They stand with a slight head tilt, either looking
down or listening, and strike their bill deep into the
lawn several times.

It's what I tend to believe to be echo sounding?
followed by a thorough eye searching. I'm thinking
they may have a mag-nification skill? It's is
performed to make the grubs think it's raining? grub
comes up to escape a pending water deluge? grub is
then checked out by magpie then comsumed IF deemed
edible.

Grub on the surface, they pick at it again, pick it up
by one end and give it a whip-crack type flick.

Must kill it, must kill it before I eat it. They
prefer to consume freshly killed food.

A stream of brown liquid flies out of the grub.

Magpies seem to be aware that some grubs have a toxic
to them liquid????? I would not be suprised to find
out that they may even check the liquid?

Down the hatch.

This description was given by my friend with the
Striated Pardalotes in her hanging pot-plant.

Shouldn't she rename them by now :^D
how about "Striated Pot-da-lots"

Regards,
Ros Laundon.

Have fun everyone. Potters off to get some "Barney the
Owl nestbox data".
