Funnily enough I was just about to write to Birding-aus about Mallards in
the ACT...
When we arrived in the ACT about seven years ago I remember very few feral
ducks of the mallard, or any other, sort, and I understood that the Parks
and Wildlife policy was to 'deal with' any feral ducks.
However the other day I reported some mallard type feral ducks on a small
ornamental pond near our suburb, which also has Black Duck, and was told
that the P & W Service can do nothing about them, and that Lake Burley
Griffin and other major artifical lakes in the ACT have 'huge' flocks that
could not be killed.
I didn't agree with any of this, as a few years ago there weren't any as far
as I was aware, and I would have thought that feral ducks are one of the few
feral birds that could easily be wiped out by simply shooting them, so long
as there are still small, discreet populations.
Does anybody konw of a juristiction in Australia where an aggressive
anti-feral duck policy is carried out, so I can use this as an example in
communication with the P & W Service, along with the New Zealand example?
