An FOC outing to Magic Point, Maroubra this morning provided excellent views
of up to three Great-winged Petrels at once within a few hundred metres of
land. More than 20 sightings were logged over a couple of hours so it is a
good chance to see this bird if you don't like boat trips. They were all
relatively dark-faced birds so probably of the nominate form (which is
consistent with the pattern of land-based sightings of Great-wings from
Sydney in May-June).
Other good sightings were a single distant Wandering Albatross, a couple of
Yellow-nosed Albatross, 4 Black-browed Albatross (both adults subspecies
impavida), several Fluttering Shearwaters, great views of perched
White-fronted Terns, Kelp Gulls and a couple of Turnstones
Onto Port Botany with WB Sea Eagle, RN Stint, Pied Oystercatcher, couple of
Kelp Gulls and unusually two White-fronted Terns ( first time I have seen
them inside the bay).
Good birding
