Hi Bruce
I once accompanied a group of birdwatchers and others, including a very
wealthy South African man and his delightful, blowsy blonde girlfriend,
who wore full-skirted silk dresses in the bush, and reminded me of a
galleon in full sail.
This woman (I forget her name) had defended members of the African
National Congress (I hope I've got this right) who were being tried for
blowing up bridges and for murder, and had had her life threatened on
many occasions. Another woman, a renowned film-maker told of how on a
deserted road their vehicle had broken down. Seeing a truck loaded with
African workers coming down the road she wanted to run and hide thinking
they were about to be robbed and raped, if not murdered, but the lawyer
stepped out into the middle of the road and hailed them like long-lost
friends. The workers hopped out, fixed the car and the women were on
their way, no problems.
At Anbangbang Billabong she saw Magpie Geese upending and exclaimed, 'Oh
look, penguins!' We all laughed, but in sheer delight at her innocent
remark. Knowing her past deeds made this woman's ignorance of birds
rather insignificant indeed.
Now another request. An American birder wants to get hold of an
Australian bird list with the names of families, and on line. Can anyone
out there help?
