The new field guide by MacKinnon and Phillips is a very welcome and long
overdue resource but unfortunately there are major faults with it -
descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps etc etc. If you own the book
and intend to use it, I highly recommend you obtain a copy of Pam
Rasmussen's book review in the last issue of the Oriental Bird Club
bulletin. I think it's the December 2000 edition, Vol. 32. If you can't
find it, drop me a line and I'll mail you a photocopy (I know it's
available at Birds Australia but don't know about other states).

I'd just like to confirm Susan's reference for those interested. It's in the Oriental Bird Club Bulletin 32, December 2000, pages 44-48. It's well worth reading, and it's pretty damning - although clearly, even with all it's faults it's a useful addition to the available literature, at least for the time being. The trick would seem to be to be aware of its shortcomings - and at least some of these seem to have been clearly identified in this review.
Richard
