There is no official four-letter code for Australian birds (although people
have occasionally devised unofficial codes of varying numbers of letters).
However,  I have found it useful to use such a code when taking notes in
the field and I have one (adapted from one originally put together by Will
Steele).  It is based on the Recommended English Names for Australian birds
in the Christidis & Boles list, but has been modified to avoid duplicates.
(I quite like the fact that the code HUGO stands for Hudsonian Godwit).  If
you (or anyone else) would find it useful, I could send it to you as an
attached spreadsheet.  Just let me know.
