Dear colleagues:

As we did in previous years, we enclose a "Call for participants" in this
project of monitoring in the Strait of Gibraltar, one of the key points for
the migration of birds in the Mediterranean basin. The project is funded by
the Regional Government of Andalucía (southern Spain) and field work is
co-ordinated by SEO/BirdLife, the Spanish partner of BirdLife International.

We would appreciate your co-operation in spreading this information and
including if possible this advertising or some reference to this project in
your magazine or some other related publication. In this case, it would be
very useful for us to receive confirmation on this (issue and date).

If you need some more information, please don´t hesitate to contact us.

MIGRATION THROUGHT THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR
MONITORING SCHEME

(Programa MIGRES)

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS, AUTUMN 2001

The Strait of Gibraltar (southern tip of Cádiz province, Andalucía, Spain)
is the most important "bottle-neck" for central and western europe
migratory birds crossing the Mediterranean Sea, travelling towards and from
their wintering quarters in the african continent. Their only 14 km of
maximun wide made this area specially important for soaring birds (storks,
vultures, eagles?), which during autumn migration concentrates by hundreds
of thousands in the area of Tarifa waiting for suitable winds to allow them
crossing to Africa.

The Regional Government of Andalucía (Consejería de Medio Ambiente, Junta
de Andalucía) is funding from 1997 onwards, and for a period of five years,
the monitoring of autumn migration of soaring birds, as a first phase of
which wants to be a complete long term monitoring scheme of bird migration
throught the Strait of Gibraltar (Programa MIGRES). Coordination of field
work is done by the Spanish partner of BirdLife International, SEO/BirdLife
(Sociedad Española de Ornitología).

During four months (mid July-mid October) different observatories are
placed along the Spanish migration front of the Strait of Gibraltar each
year, and volunteers are needed to cover them, together with the
specialists responsible of the project. Volunteers will carry out bird
counts from predetermined watch-sites, with a flexible timetable (but no
less than 9 hours daily) depending on the migration conditions. Every day,
onve the observation work is over, all the volunteers meet with field work
co-ordinators to check the data obtained and solve doubts about bird´s
behaviour.

Minimun staying of 14 days are required from 24 July to 10 October. If
number of participants per turn allow it, those who asked for it could stay
for two turns.

Those periods for 2001 autumn campaing are: 1) 24 July - 6 August; 2) 6 -
19 August; 3) 19 August 1 September; 4) 1 - 14 September; 5) 14 - 27
September and 6) 27 September - 10 October. Shorter turns (minimum 5 days
staying) are possible from 10 October till 20 November.

Volunteers will be selected according with their own experience,
availability of time, knowledge of the area (although not essential).
Subsistence and accomodation expenses will be fully covered by the Junta de
Andalucía, but a small registration fee must be paid.

Further information can be obtained from address below, where also
pre-registration forms must be sent (via fax, e-mail or ordinary mail,
following annex enclosed) together with a short ornithological curriculum
(not needed for participants in previous MIGRES campaings):
