Hi Birdo's

Is there a recognised list of bird threats and processes that affect
Australian birds? My twin grandchildren asked for a list, they are
doing a bird conservation project at their school so we sat down and made a list in the order of importance as we recognised them to be.

We quickly realised there are many problems that affect one group of
birds and and not another, e.g. natural vegetation clearing does not
affect many migratory waders.

Many of the problems that we listed have been discussed on
birding-aus.  Our list so far, not entirely in order of importance is;

1 Natural vegetation land clearing
2 Swamp reclamation
3 Mangrove reclamation
4 Overseas habitat destruction affecting our migratory bird
    feeding, sheltering and nesting habitat
5 Controlled burning particularly during nesting season
6 Road Kills
7 Predation from cats and foxes
8 Duck Shooting
9 Agricultural and Horticultural bird pest destruction
10 Habitat destruction from overgrazing
11 Other feral predators such as rats and mice
12 Outback artesian bore drain and swamp destruction from capping
   bores
13 Toxic tailing dams at mines
14 Collision with overhead power lines near wetlands
15 Long line fishing
16 Feral animal competitors (e.g. rabbits graze food and protective
   cover)
17 Cannon netting and bird-banding
18 Out of balance native predators (silver gulls)
19 Out of balance native competitors (food and nesting sites)
20 Human disturbance at nesting colonies and sites
21 Bird skin collecting
22 Egg collecting
23 Trapping for aviculture
24 Accidental agricultural poisoning
25 Artificial water level management
26 Electrocution from power lines
27 Eradication of food source (e.g. Calici virus remove rabbits)

What other bird destructive threats have we missed? Any discussion
on the list so far?

Hello again

A summary of the discussion so far has increased the size of the list to 32 items. Some new items may be subcategories (B) of existing subjects. The initials of the authors are bracketed!

06(B) Trains and aeroplanes (SA)
09(B) Deliberate poisoning (MN)
11(B) Pigs (L&LK)
12(B) Re-forestation of cleared land affecting seed eaters (TP)
16(B) Bees competing for nesting hollows (P&IM)
28 Natural predation by birds of prey (FO)
29 Parasitism by cuckoos (FO)
30 Weed invasion (L&LK)
31 Introduction of new diseases(L&LK)
32 Habitat degradation from the spread of euc. dieback and other plant diseases(L&LK)

If you can think of more, I will attempt to summarize them.

Bye for now

Marilyn
