Subject: Historical animal influxes (Vic.)
Jack Krohn makes some interesting points in regard to the recent 'arrival' of
several lorikeet species into Victoria (Aust.) so I thought a look at the Atlas
of Victorian Wildlife data may show something.
I checked the records of Musk, Little and Rainbow Lorikeets over the periods
<1900, 1900-1969, 1970-1989 and after 1989. As many Victorian birdos may be
aware, the big influxes of these species show up in the years after 1970 in
particular with recent records being noticable in and around Melbourne and the
box-ironbark areas of the state.
In regard to Jack's comment on individuals of a species coming into Victoria for
many years prior to wildlife survey efforts. The Grey-headed Flying-fox
Pteropus poliocephalus was first recorded in the state as far back as the 1880s
although (unfortunately) no numbers were given by the observer.
Just got my Atlas newsletter and am looking forward to some detailed analysis of
the new data for similar phenomena.
