Hi Mike Forest Kingfishers do turn up now and then in the Sydney region abut are somewhat rare. They have been seen here, I think, every summer over the past 5 years. The last one probably being at Thornleigh (north of Sydney) a few months ago. Forest Kingfishers are infact a dark blue on the head, nape (except males with a full white collar), wings and on tail. The back and rump is a lighter blue. Forehead spots, chin and rest of under-parts (unless dirty) is normally a cleaner white than the Scared. Forest Kingfishers often have a tinge of buff at their sides which is normally covered by their wings. But a distinguishing feature in this species is the white windows in the wings seen in flight which the Sacred lacks. As you saw these white windows, It appears you may have seen a relatively dirty Forest Kingfisher. Edwin |
