As I write only one Koel is calling around the house at present. Earlier this morning about 4 were 'going off' and I wondered why they feel impelled to advertise their presence so obviously. Apart from courtship and agonistic behaviour perhaps the male sometimes calls to draw attention away from the female who may be laying. Channel-billed Cuckoos also let everyone know they're around.
