Leeches can be distracting when ascending your
legs at the rate of hundreds per hour, especially while attempting bird surveys
in moist forests. Hikers don't understand the problem because they keep
moving. When forced to stand still in deep leaf litter for 20 minutes or
more, the numbers attracted can be astounding.
Following the advice of
"I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay, I wear women's underwear ....etc", I
found that wearing two pairs of fine denier pantyhose stopped leeches from
biting me, at least below the waist.
Applications of salt, soap and a little vigilance should take
care of the rest.
