Are their any aborists out there who will refute our local
Council arborist ?
I asked him to leave holes in park trees according to the
recommendation in an Australian Plant Society (formerly SGAP)
publication about "Protecting and creating habitat in bushland
and local parks and gardens" by Danie Ondinea and Ian McAllan
"Leave dead stumps, approximately 30 cm. from the trunk, when
branches are being removed from mature trees. These stumps allow
the formation of hollows which will provide nest sites or
shelters for possums, parrots, owls, etc."
He said "The issue of leaving stubs / stumps from dead branches
unfortunatley goes against all good arboriculture practice and
therefore I am not comfortable with that.
The reason being that this type of pruning is consistent with
lopping whichleaves the trees system open to attack from pest
and disease."
