I would hate people to accept this point of view and so not put
birding stickers on their cars. I have had stickers on my cars for
20 years and have never had a problem. (If anyone did break in the
most they would ever find is a rather battered field guide.) I carry
out commonsense precautions, such as never leaving valuables in view
and never putting anything in the boot before leaving the car. (If I
am leaving anything in or taking anything out of the boot I do so
before making my final stop.)
however If you put stickers in cars or pennants attached to
aerials you are certainly advertising that you are a birder. You are also
telling people that you are carrying around a lot of expensive equipment (&
frequently leaving it in the car). This is an open invitation to car thieves
to break in.
