I received a phone call from Lorraine Cairnes and Peter Moffit who
originally alerted me to the presence of the Wompoo Fruit-Dove at
Castlecrag in the northern suburbs of Sydney. The Wompoo has not been
seen since last week but was replaced by two Topknot Pigeons,
yesterday afternoon. Not as rare as the Wompoo but not common in
Sydney; I suspect that they might be increasing in number here.
Certainly I am beginning to see them more often. It appears that the
food supply attracting these pigeons is a fruiting fig tree.
In the past month I have had two sightings of Topknots in Sydney in
addition to this report.
Unfortunately my local fig is currently restaurant of the month for
the local Pied Currawongs, who are also keen to use eggs/nestlings of
my kookaburras as a dietary supplement.
