Thanks all who responded to this query. Briefly,
from the many responses, it can be summed up as follows:
1) Why are White-eyed Ducks
called "Hardheads"? - has got to do with these ducks probably having quite a
strong skull compared to the other ducks.
2) Why are black and yellow birds called "Regent" -
black and yellow (or gold) were the colours of the Prince of Wales who later
became George IV. He was known as the Prince Regent because he served as regent
(ie acting king) during the periodic bouts of madness of his father George III.
