Dear Birding-Aus & BARD
During late 1999/2000 Birds Australia was
commissioned by the NSW NPWS to conduct surveys for the Rufous Scrub-bird
(Atrichornis rufescens) in north-east NSW. The surveys are part
of a long term (5-year) monitoring program designed to assess the abundance of
the species in World Heritage National Parks (Barrington Tops, Werrikimbie, New
England, Gibraltar Range/Washpool, Border Ranges).
Last years surveys were a huge success, which
was a result of valuable volunteer assistance. This years surveys are
about to commence and volunteers are required to assist in surveys in
the Barrington Tops and Border Ranges National Parks. The surveys are
a great opportunity for volunteers to assist in the conservation of this rare
and cryptic species in some of the most beautiful World Heritage rainforests of
the east coast. Also a great opportunity to camp out and see some of the rarer
rainforest birds, mammals and plants that occur in those regions.
The proposed surveys are as follows:
18-19th November - Border Ranges
25th November - Barrington Tops
2-3rd December - Border Ranges
9th December - Barrington Tops
Please note, that these dates may be subject to
some slight variation. At Barrington Tops, we will camp at the Gloucester River
camping area, whilst at the Border Ranges we will camp at Sheepstation Creek
and/or Forest Tops. As per last year,
volunteers will be re-imbursed by NSW NPWS for their fuel, food and accomodation
expenses. Transport can be arranged for those without.
Those who are interested should contact me at the
below address.
Cheers
Peter A.
