Hello all,
I've realised I mad a mistake in the Frogmouth email. I said the rufous
tawny was a standard grey one! Well obviously it can't be both. You'll just
have to believe me when I tell that it was tawny rufous! I'm a little
confused.

I haven't seen red-phase Tawny Frogmouth in NSW, but I did come across a
beautiful one in the northern end of Lakefield NP (Cape York) in about June.
It was a standard grey Tawny. In July, I came across a red phase Papuan
Frogmouth in the southern end of Lakefield which was a great sight. I saw a
lot of Papuans while I ws working up on Lakefield but this was the one and
only red phase one that I came across, and I spent a while looking at it
trying to convince myself that it really was what I thought it was.
Apparently rufous morphs pop up in the females more often than the males. I
wonder whether this is the case for the Tawnys as well?

Sounds like you have seen as few as I have. My three sightings have been
spread over about 22 years:
One at Mungo Brush, Myall Lakes NP on the coast of northern NSW in about
1978, and two recently at Cremorne and Artarmon. The (almost) deafening
silence from others on birding-aus suggests that this morph. (thank you
Philip Veerman for correcting me - not "phase") is most uncommon in NSW.
Are there any contradictions to this view?

I have rarely encountred the red-phase Tawny Frogmouth amongst the loads of
sightings of Tawny Frogmouths. Have seen them in Sydney area at Prospect and
near Narrabeen aswell as at Glouster Tops, in the upper Hunter region.
