I sent a personal message to Terry Pacey with some suggestions, but perhaps
it should go to a wider audience.
I suggested that the owners / managers of Clifton Hill Station become a
station stay. This is a quickly growing activity in Western Australia
where many farms and stations are supplementing their income with
tourism. People like staying on stations for many reasons. My experience
is that it is mainly owners who do this rather than managers, but it would
be good if this could be done for Clifton Hills. Many of the best birding
sites in Western Australia are on stations such as Nallan, White Wells,
Thundelarra, Pardoo, Ninghan, Kingston Rest, Muggon, Murchison, etc. The
facilities vary from rooms in the homestead, to use of the shearers
quarters, to camping.
Then maybe people would not need to camp at Goyders Lagoon / Koonchera but
visit it on a day basis (although I must say that sunset over the lignum
swamp is spectacular and should not be missed). I find that owners are
very interested in the bird list for their station (in fact many keep a list).
Terry said that the operators of Clifton Hills have had problems of having
to tow people out who get bogged or breakdown. I suggested that maybe
there was a way that they get accredited with the state motoring
association (equivalent of NMRA or RAC). Then they could charge people who
needed the assistance. Paying for your mistakes is a very good incentive
not to repeat them.
