I'm afraid that its not just tickers that are refused entry to land.
In fact, tickers that show that they are not allied to any official
organisation probably have more chance of getting permission with some
landholders. Through my work on Cape York, I was refused entry to a
number of properties despite my working for QPWS and Tropical Savannas
CRC. In fact, I had the impression that it was BECAUSE I was allied
with govt. departments.
There are a number of properties that I have not been able to access
which have Star and Crimson Finch records. I have no idea what
populations of the finches they are supporting- it makes conservation
planning and number estimating a bit hard. This is despite having a
legitimate line of research.
However, I do think that its a good idea for Birds Australia to
co-ordinate access to properties that support significant bird
populations. This doesn't have to be a ticking exercise, it can
involve short-term intensive bird research. Birds Australia atlassing
would be a good example of the type of rapid research that could be
conducted using as many people as possible. I don't know what chance
they would have, but its worth a go.
