On Saturday's Sydney Morning Herald (23rd September) in the Good Weekend liftout, there was an Inetersting feature on Cassowaries titled "How to stuff a cassowary". It highlighted the significant decline in the population of Cassowaries in QLD Wet Tropics region with probably no more than 1500 still remaining around Cairns. The article highlighted the problems between the demands of the Sugar Cane Farmers and the need to conserve the remaining cassowary habitat. It mentioned the last seen Cassowarries at both Mt Whitefield and Lake Barrine and how these poor birds are given a poor reputation. What is being done to save these birds from extinction?

An Australian Magpie has currently made a nest (and incubating 4 eggs) on top of the Olympic Stadium with a birds eye view of all the Athletic events in the stadium for FREE for the remaining duration of the Olympics (I bet its cheering for Cathy Freeman as she runs!). Another nesting Magpie is harrassing the Olympic mountain bike riders at Horsley Park and one harrassed me at Prospect Reservoir this morning.

Also last night, between watching the Athletics and Womens Water Polo match, I decided to switch to channel 2 and watch the second part of the show called "Alien Cats" which featured David Pepper Edwards and a few Victorian birdo's. The documentary was about the sighting of Pumas and Mountain Lions in the Grampians and other areas in Victoria. Has anybody seen such large cats or any unsual mystical beasts while out birding? (I have seen the Bunyip on a few occassions !). I remember seeing 2 very large black feral cats (one chasing the other) right in front of me, in bushland near Blacktown. They were the largest cats I have ever seen, but were not the size of a Puma.

I have heard that Birds Australia is putting on air during bird week their first TV add. Is that the case?

I will be heading off to the Capertee Valley this Long weekend. Is anybody else heading out that way aswell?
