David,
I have had quite a few responses to this query, and generally it is
agreed that there exist, in a variety of locations within the WWFW
distribution, individuals which appear to be black. Some claim they
are black, but most believe they are not black-black but blue-black.
I'm happy to accept that the individual I saw was blue-black, and
wouldn't care to claim that any of the birds is black-black. I think
you'd need the bird in the hand to be certain.
Thanks to all who responded, in case I missed anyone individually.
Cheers,
Jill

I know a couple between Bingara and Moree who swear they have black
White-winged Fairy-wrens. Having spent some time on their property I can
confidently say that "their" birds and, probably, yours are extremely deep
blue. In really good light you can see the blue but otherwise they do look
black.
Cheers
David
