At 5.55pm local time today my local raptor spotters, the Noisy
Miners, alerted me to the presence of yet another raptor close to the
centre of Sydney. I went to the balcony and much to my surprise
a Black Kite was slowly moving east-south-east above Flat Rock
Gully; initially it was high to the west but gradually moved closer
and then low over the apartment.
I have lived in this municipality almost continuously since 1983
and this is only my third sighting of this species here, and in fact
anywhere in Sydney.
Ern Hoskin in "Birds of Sydney" describes this species
as being "a rare straggler" to the area.
The bird was at
33° 49.245´ 151°
12.535´.
Regards, Andy
