A few years ago I was walking in Rainbow Forest/Cliveden Park (Cubberla Creek,
Indooroopilly, Brisbane) about dusk when a large, tight flock of dark,
pigeon-like birds came from behind, low, with not a call, just the sound of many
wingbeats melding into one imposing sound. They flew just outside the edge of
the forest, a little below the height of the tops of the Camphor Laurels, but
way below the height of the Eucalypts and other taller trees. The flock
manoeuvred deftly between clumps of trees going very fast towards the setting
sun so I did not get my bins on them. There is a pigeon 'fancier' living in the
neighbourhood and my first thought was that he had let his pigeons out for
exercise. It is my impression that pigeons are fast fliers and I guess racing
pigeons would be even faster.
