G'day all
I've just been playing with the brilliant online Atlas mapping stuff
(www.abc.net.au/birds/). This is a map front-end to the database of atlas
records (up to April 2000 I think). You can click on a 1degree block and get a
list of species recorded. I did this for the four blocks that cover sw Victoria
and came up with 307 species. There were a few odd ones among them which makes
me wonder about the vetting of records. Apparently people have been seeing
Long-billed Black-Cockatoos, White-browed Treecreepers, Yellow Wattlebirds and
Black Currawongs in my patch and no-one told me. I've been known to fill in the
wrong circle on a couple of atlas sheets and I've had to justify a few unusual
sightings so I know stuff happens.
Would Rory or someone from the Atlas project team have another look at these
records please?
Maybe others should have a look at the lists for blocks they know well.
The other "outstanding" record for my area was the Koel but I can vouch for that
one.
Cheers
Steve
