Dear birders,
I have just returned from a few days work in Canberra and was gratified
that our sighting of a Brush Bronzewing and a Beautiful Firetail in the
Capertee Valley has given rise to such interest in the meantime. For
the record on the latter species, I also once saw one in 1997 at Fitzroy
Falls in the NSW Southern Highlands, which I thought was a little
unusual habitat. I now see others have found them there too.

Jerrambomberra Wetlands were not exciting at 7.30 a.m. on a frosty
Thursday morning (when it had reached -7 degrees overnight) the only
thing of interest being a pair of Australian Shelducks. But there are
still two Blue-billed ducks, both male, on the settling ponds over the
road from the Wetlands. Mt Majura on Saturday morning was much nicer,
in bright sunshine. Large numbers of small woodland birds, including
Weebill and Buff-rumped Thornbill were on the track up to the saddle,
and at least one pair of Speckled Warblers. I saw one pair of the
latter going up, and another in a different place coming down, but they
might have been the same birds. I also found a family trio of Glossy
Black Cockatoos on the Casuarinas to the North of the saddle. They seem
to be quite regular there now.
Cheers,
John Clifton-Everest
