Last Thursday (8 June) I saw 3 Petroica spp. in a small reserve in the eastern
suburbs of Melbourne, Old Joes Creek Retarding Basin (Melway 65 A6, off Market
St near Dorset Road in Boronia). These included a female Red-capped Robin and a
male Scarlet Robin, both loosely associated with a party of insectivorous birds
on the southern edge of the reserve, next to private gardens. There were also
two brown-coloured Pink Robins, characteristically among teatree etc. on the
north-western fence-line. It's curious that vagrant Red-caps should turn up in
winter as well as summer, but I know this does happen. Cheers, Richard.
