Dear Birding-ausers,

For non-locals interested in birding in the Capertee valley, this is a
composite of information kindly offered by Birding-aus subscribers.

LOCATION: NSW, To the east of the Lithgow/Mudgee Road.
Western boarder (S to N) = Capertee, Kandos and Rylstone.
Southern boarder = Gardens of Stone Nat.Park and Pantoneys Crown Nat. Park.
Eastern boundary = Wollemi Nat. Park.
Northern boundary = Rylstone.
Centre(loosely) = Glen Davis (town). NB.: Capertee is not actually in the
Capertee valley.

GETTING THERE: From Sydney, Go West of the Blue Mountains, then Lithgow/Mudgee
road, to Capertee village, about 70k north of Lithgow. How? - After Lithgow,
just after you pass the Lithgow correctional Centre, take the left hand
lead-off to Mudgee. This takes you right over the road you've just left.
Carry on until you reach Capertee village. Take the right hand turning just
after the petrol station - this is signposted Glen Davis and leads you into the
valley. Glen Davis is on the Capertee River at the foot of Wollomi Nat. Park.
Just before the road gets to Glen Davis the road forks and the northern fork
goes via Glen Alice and Kandos to Rylstone.

BIRDING: Unless you stay on one of the properties such as "Rockview" or
"Goolooinboin", it is all private property so birding is mostly restricted to
the road. There are plenty of good areas to watch birds along the roadsides.

AMENITIES:

   * Free camping at Glen Davis
   * Various cottages which offer accommodation in the valley.
   * No shops or petrol in the valley.

COMMENTS:

   * It is a big area and all of it is very scenic and full of birds.
   * The valley is in great condition and Regent Honeyeaters are present.
   * Glen Alice is home to a pair of Barking Owls.
   * Best to have a fairly detailed map of the area.

Thanks to David, Penny, Andy, Allan and Carol.

Regards,
Ros Laundon.
