In my childhood (1940s and 50s) many people in the bush still referred
to ALL small to medium raptors as Chicken Hawk. They always told you
that these birds lived exclusively on domestic poultry and racing
pigeons.
Larger raptors were all Eagles, notoriously given to carrying off sheep,
lambs, kangaroos, calves and small children.
They told you that shooting them was a good deed to protect the
environment.
Fortunately, these days you don't hear these opinions so often, but as a
very large proportion of dead and injured raptors are suffering gunshot
wounds, these opinions must still be current with some people.
