Hi birders,
The cold weather has brought in southern seabirds to the Sydney coast in
the last 24 hours. This morning over 40 Black-browed Albatrosses passed
Maroubra in half an hour, and prions were passing is good numbers yesterday
and this morning - earlier in the winter than in previous years.
Fluttering/ Hutton's were moving north in their hundreds - it's the first
time since December there have been so many, and gannets are finally moving
north in tens rather than ones. White-fronted Terns have also started to
arrive in numbers. The wind is still offshore, and the viewing conditions
are very hazy, so when the winds finally turn onshore, there could be a
bonanza, and the first giant petrels and Southern Skuas should be around
soon (if they aren't already here). After an extremely quiet May on the
seabird front, things are looking good.
