In reply to Richard's update on this very tragic and
shocking event surely it is time to put all yes ALL
carcenergenic 11KV power cables underground? How many
creatures do we have to lose human and animal merely
to supply power to business's and homes in the fashion
we do? are we not modern thinking people living in a
modern society in an ancient land with the greatest
thinking minds on this planet for inventing? or do we
just go along with what ever happened to the last
brolga, black swan or Pelican.
I think an old phrase once used by BHP and the
SECV look up and save a life, should now be look up it
might be the last chance to see one? then again
perhaps chernobyl is a nice place to live after all.

Hi all

A few months ago we retrieved the body of a freshly
killed pelican from a street here in Roma. It had been
electrocuted after hitting power lines adjacent to a
pond - the scorch marks were obvious on the feathers.
As Phillip V points out, to short-circuit and
therefore
fry yourself, you have to be big enough to contact two
wires. This seems to only happen to big birds - I've
seen similar fatalities in pelicans, black swans and
brolgas elsewhere. A common thread in their demise
was that the birds appeared to have hit the lines
while approaching or taking off from adjacent water
bodies.

And the last line is perhaps the beginning to our
answer?

PS. The comment about two wires only applies to the
'domestic' supply lines. The big, cross-country 11KV
transmission lines are much more dangerous, as a bloke
who climbed one and then urinated from the top found
out - KAPOW!!!
