Hi all... Had the morbid pleasure of watching a Powerful Owl tear apart
a Ringtail Possum down the road at Beecroft, Sydney, last night. I
watched it feed for almost 45 minutes. A lot of tugging and shaking, and
wing bouncing with each heave at the possum's flesh. Steven Edwards, a
fellow birdo, and his brother located it at the back of their house.
Steven heard the poor possum's tortured cries when it was attacked, and
his brother saw the bird flying off with the victim. At one stage there
were about six people looking at the owl feed about twenty feet up in
this gum, but the owl was nonchalant, even with the torch beams. We
didn't bother it too much. This seems to be one of two sub-adult, almost
adult, young birds that have been around of late. There was no sign of
the other of the pair... I hope it is okay. I last saw and heard from
the pair on the 24th of February.

Peace,

Lorne.
