Denise, I know that there aren't more than one or two mangrove specific bird species in South Africa. Don't know about community involvement in Capetown planning ,but there is a program in some areas to replace exotic weeds such as Australian acacias and eucalypts with natives . Unfortunately literally millions of acres of SA are euclypt tree plantations [among other tree species] ,replacing much of the forest in the north-east. The joke is that the SA bird guides are mostly published by the paper companies that have destroyed vast areas of habitat. By the way, I think you are still using the old address for birding-aus.
