Hello All
I can't give any update on the plan to dam most of the Darwin Harbour
estuaries. The Harbour Alliance consisting of fisherfolk including
fishing tour operators, local government and the environment centre don't
want anyone else involved at this time, and I'm too involved right now
with family matters to do anything about it. I fear that as last time
with the Stuart Park mangroves, birds and birdwatchers will only rate a
passing mention.
I suspect the removal of such a huge area of mangroves will have quite a
devastating effect on local birds, directly in the case of
mangrove-specific species and indirectly on those that use mangroves as a
refuge. Can anyone direct me to papers that might explore this issue?
One thing; the Government is proposing to involve the community in the
planning process using a strategy adopted in Cape Town, South Africa.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks
Denise
