Gooday Bob,
I have the article in front of me "Swift action" by David Andrew, that
appeared in "Australian Birding Magazine" Vol 2 No. 3 Spring 1995 page 7-14.
It contains info and tail diagrams for the following species
Glossy Swiftlet, Christmas Is. race and New Guinea race.
White rumped Swiftlet.
Uniform Swiftlet and close species that may prove inseperable in the field.
White throated Needletail.
Papuan Spinetail.
Fork tailed Swift.
Common Swift.
House Swift.
This may have been the article that you were thinking about. I observed what
I thought to be at the time Red-rumped Swallows at Kamma Pine Creek Road,
South of Cairns. There were at least 20 or so birds from memory perched on
the stay wires of the ABC radio transmitter. At the time I never considered
Striated Swallow as I was totally unaware that this was a closely related
species that could be confused in the field.
Incidentally, I have a recollection of an article, possibly in a
news-letter or journal from one of the clubs/associations, giving a
description of diagnostic points (with drawings) in the patterns on tails
of various swallows likely to be seen in Australia. It was a few years ago
and possibly covered Welcome, Barn and Pacific but I have been unable to
locate it in my collection. Does anyone have any knowledge of that article?
