We (Dick and I - yes it really is Lynn this time and not Dick who is the
real birdo in the family) were in Darwin in August last year. Now,
travelling with Dick you can understand that a large part of our time was
spent ticking off, or just merely observing the birdlife.
Interestingly we went on a cruise on the Mary River with some other people
we didn't know from a bar of soap, so I don't know their backgrounds, but
when it came to a choice between birds and crocodiles, there was not one
dissenting voice that we would rather watch the birds (seen one crocodile
basking on the river bank, seen them all - different if they were coming
for your maybe!).
We also spent part of our trip on a group bus tour (we were up there for a
conference) and quite a few people, once they found out we could actually
tell them what they were looking at, were quite interested to have the
birds identified for them, and would seek us out to ask what something was.
I admit though, I get really quite appalled at how little people do know
about what is all around them.
Dick fell in love with the Top End for the sheer volume of every bird, but
for me it was the raptors.
One sight that really stays with me is watching young sea eagles, whistling
and black kites "practising" on a colony of fruit bats.
Oh well, I had better shut up before I get in trouble for usurping "his"
list, and go back to my horses!
Lynn
